Super Hero MMO's: Something For Everybody

As an on again-off again player of NCsoft's City of Heroes for the past three or so years, and as someone who recently managed to get his PS3 back up and running in order to take Sony's DC Universe Online for a spin, I have to say I'm pretty happy with the direction Super Hero MMO's are heading in.

Along with Cryptic Studios' Champions Online and Gazillion Entertainment's upcoming Marvel Heroes, fans of the Super Hero MMO have a lot of options when it comes to finding the right crime-fighting experience for them. Each game has its share of different character classes, locations, quests, character progression systems, and social tools. All four games have also adopted a F2P model so players are encouraged to give them all a whirl at no initial cost (Marvel Heroes will be F2P from the get-go).

While some may be skeptical when regarding the hidden costs behind F2P games, I can safely say due to my time with both City of Heroes and DC Universe that there is actually a staggering amount of content available in both games without having to pay a cent and I'm sure Champions Online has a similar approach as will Marvel Heroes.

All three of the currently released MMO's allow free players to create two separate characters, letting them try out two different character builds or, in DC Universe's and City of Heroes' case, create both a hero and a villain (Champions Online has a similar feature in which the player can create and design their own "nemesis" NPC villain for their character to fight once they reach a certain level). So if being the goody-goody heroic poster boy (or girl) isn't your thing, you can create your own evil mastermind and go on a personal crime-spree!

So if you're itching to try out a new flavor of MMO's and you always wondered what it would be like to have super-powers, now's the best time to get in on the action.

  1. I have all three of them and I'm probably gonna be trying Marvel Heroes when it's released. These games are really fun and I hope they continue to make more like them.
